EKREM CIZMIC

Internationally Recognized Artist and Painter

“You might as well ask an artist to explain his art, or ask a poet to explain his poem. It defeats the purpose. The meaning is only clear thorough the search.”

Visual Artist from Sarajevo, Bosnia & Herzegovina

Born in 1937, in Banja Luka, Bosnia. Ekrem attended art schools in Sarajevo and Belgrade, learning from historical figures and popular artists like Dimitrijevic, Mujezinovic, Andrejevic-Kun and the others. In 1960 Ekrem went to Paris where he worked in professor Lotta’s art studio, after which he spent some time traveling (in search of inspiration) and eventually returning to Sarajevo where he started his long and creative artistic career.
He was one of the founding members of Fine Arts Community of Bosnia and Herzegovina. During his 50 year long career, Ekrem has exhibited in 5 continents, he was featured in hundreds of magazines/papers and radio/TV shows.
In early 1992, his exhibition was set on fire by one of the first projectiles fired on Sarajevo’s urban landscape. Later same year, out of revolt, Ekrem has set up yet another exhibition, which was a very first cultural event in a war-torn Sarajevo at that time. It was followed by countless reports of it’s bravery and artistic beauty in all the media outlets.  (…read more)

While oil on canvas was his favorite way to paint, Ekrem also did fresco-wall painting, watercolor, murals, book design, illustrations and other techniques. His Graphic serials (‘Molunat’ in the 80’s, ‘Destroyed Bosnian Mosques’ in the 90’s, just to name a few), pressed in very limited quantities, touched up and signed by hand, were extremely popular and highly requested. Many of them were also reproduced and printed on calendars, posters, book covers and magazines.

HUGE INVENTORY OF EKREM’S PAINTINGS IS IN POSSESSION OF PEOPLE WORLDWIDE. IF YOU HAPPEN TO PERSONALLY HAVE ONE (OR MORE) OF HIS OIL PAINTINGS / GRAPHICS / ILLUSTRATIONS, PLEASE TAKE A PHOTO AND UPLOAD IT HERE; SO WE CAN ARRANGE HIS LARGE OPUS AND CONNECT THE MISSING PIECES. THANK YOU.
